Things to do

Samoens

Samoens is in the Northern French Alps, between Morzine & Chamonix, and 1 hour from Geneva.  Set in a spectacular & beautiful Alpine area, Samoens is designated as one of the prettiest villages in France  & a great location for almost every outdoor activity imaginable.

Based in the heart of the Grand Massif mountain region, one of the French Alps largest ski areas, & nestled in the stunning valley of the Giffre river, Samoens and surrounding area provide spectacular scenery including mountain lakes, national parks, waterfalls, botanical gardens and an abundance of wildlife. The village includes a beautiful market square, surrounded by historic buildings, and an ancient church. The village centre is traffic free, and the main street is a delight, full of gourmet food shops,  pâtisseries, cafes & restaurants, & a handful of gorgeous Savoyard shops, along with a weekly local food and craft market. It has a great deal to offer families, groups and individuals of all ages.

Things to do in and around Samoens

Some of our favourite places to go in the summer;

  • The Samoens open air swimming pool complex, complete with big red slide, children’s pool and cafe.
  • The Lac au Dames parc in Samoens which includes different children’s play areas, lots of green space, cycle paths, high ropes and even a golf driving range all based around the lake.
  • Le Lac Bleu fresh water lake in Morillon complete with sandy beach for a swim, or high ropes in the trees, or a round of crazy golf, finishing off with an ice cream or a cold beer.
  • The weekly Wednesday Samoens market full of local food producers & craftsmen.
  • Starting the day with a fresh coffee & pastry from Bakery Tiffanie, & then up in the cable car to enjoy the fantastic views and hikes in the mountains.
  • Parapenting from Samoens 1600, cycling in the mountains, or along the valley, and white water rafting from Sixt back to Samoens – www.xtremeglisses-samoens.com
  • My favourite coffee stop, is Les Tartines des Martine in Samoens, complete with homemade pastries, cakes & chocolates. There are many others great cafes to choose from, along with Creperies, ice cream shops, bars & restaurants to suit all tastes.
  • The amazing botanical gardens in the centre of the village, open all year.
  • Paddle boarding and inflatables in the nearby lakes of Les Gets and Montriond.
  • There are regular events, markets, and live music in the Samoens village square throughout the summer and winter months.

Eateries

  • Our favourite eateries in winter & summer include La Reposette in Verceland, consistently fantastic food and atmosphere.
  • L’ Igloo, at the top of the chair lift in Morillon – Always amazing food, and spectacular views from their red deck chairs!
  • In the village we love La Canette for great burgers at a great price

Winter

  • In the winter, the 265 Km of skiing & boarding across the Grand Massif area includes Flaine, Les Carroz, as well as Morillon, Samoens & Sixt, with ski runs to suit all abilities. Our boys first learnt to ski with ZigZag, based in Samoens who were brilliant. The Grand Massif bubble lift accesses Samoens 1600 in just 8 minutes from the village, putting you in the heart of the Grand Massif ski area.
  • The Portes du Soleil ski area offering over 650 km, can be accessed by a 30 minute drive to Les Gets, and offers yet more fantastic skiing and scenery.
